Wichita Animal Services launches Microchip Mondays and reports January intake figures

Emily Hurst, shelter manager at Wichita Animal Services, announced the launch of Microchip Mondays for the month of February, offering free microchips to Wichita residents' pets from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on designated days. Hurst said the microchips can be scanned by any facility with a microchip scanner and help reunite lost animals with owners.
Hurst reported that Microchip Mondays has already microchipped a little over 60 animals and encouraged residents to bring pets that can handle routine vaccinations. She noted alternate options: microchipping at the shelter for $15 or through local rescues or veterinarians.
Hurst also provided January shelter statistics: 658 animals were brought into the shelter, with 10 cats and 112 dogs returned to their owners so far. She introduced a featured adoptable dog named "Bolt" (animal number A184789), found near the 2400 block of South Washington on Feb. 10; if Bolt is not reclaimed, Hurst said the dog will transfer to the Kansas Humane Society early next week.
Mayor Lily thanked Hurst and Vice Mayor Glasscock for bringing the pet of the week and reiterated the city's goal of reuniting pets with owners and increasing adoptions.
