Commissioners give thumbs-up to Centennial request for Dove Valley trail funding

Jenny Volney, community development director for the City of Centennial, requested $826,000 from the Dove Valley Working Group to fund two detached 8-foot concrete multipurpose trails along South Potomac Street and South Blackhawk Street. Centennial will match the county working-group contribution 50% for a total project cost of $1,652,000.
Volney said the project completes missing links in the Dove Valley network, connects to the East Fremont Trail and will serve access to Del Valle Regional Park and regional athletic fields. She told the board the trails are designed to be detached from the roadway, safer for both pedestrians and cyclists, and consistent with previous county-funded trails in the area.
Commissioners asked about the planning background, parking and connections to a proposed training facility and stadium; Centennial staff said the trails are intended as long-term multimodal connections and that project-specific parking was not yet finalized. The county recorded an informal thumbs-up consensus in the room (reported as "5 thumbs up") to support the $826,000 request; staff also noted the project had the working group and open-space advisory board's endorsement.
Centennial staff said they aim to start construction as early as December and complete the trails by March if conditions permit. The board's encouragement appears to move the item toward formal placement on a consent agenda or subsequent funding action for final approval.
