Tazewell supervisors back IDA application for up to $3 million in flood housing funds for Richlands

Speaker 2 told the board the Department of Conservation and Recreation has a flood housing program and that the county can apply for up to $3,000,000 to assist flood victims. He said Mr. Holt and Senator Hackworth asked the county to support the application and that the IDA had previously been designated as the county's local housing authority to act on such grants.
Speaker 3 moved to authorize the IDA to apply and Speaker 4 seconded; the motion passed on a voice vote. Speaker 2 said the application window was closing and that the county was authorizing the IDA to submit the application even though the county does not know whether it will be awarded.
If awarded, Speaker 2 said the grant would fund construction of homes that would be sold at a discount to flood victims, and proceeds from those sales would be used to build additional flood-relief homes.
Next steps: the IDA will submit the application; the board provided authorization and a supporting resolution to proceed.
