Board approves grant-extension, accepts VFD chief resignation and temporarily suspends volunteer fire department operations
Summary
Following executive session, supervisors extended a construction deadline for Victory Life Ministries, accepted Scott Cornwell’s resignation as volunteer fire chief, ordered a temporary suspension of the Tazewell County Volunteer Fire Department until Jan. 15, 2026 under Va. Code §27‑10, and authorized solicitation of county attorney applications.
Several formal actions followed the board’s executive closed session on Nov. 6.
Supervisor (speaker 9) moved to revise a grant offer to Victory Life Ministries LLC, extending the deadline to complete construction from Dec. 31, 2027 to Mar. 31, 2028, and allowing any required grant repayment to be made in five equal annual payments beginning July 1, 2028, without interest. The board seconded and approved the revision by voice vote.
Supervisor (speaker 2) moved to accept the resignation of Scott Cornwell as chief of the Tazewell County Volunteer Fire Department; the motion carried. The same supervisor then moved to order the Tazewell County Volunteer Fire Department to temporarily suspend operations pursuant to Virginia Code §27‑10 through Jan. 15, 2026; that motion was seconded and carried, with the meeting record noting a 4–1 tally on the vote (four ayes, one nay).
Later the board moved to solicit applications for county attorney and proposals from qualified attorneys and law firms for county legal work, setting application and proposal deadlines of Nov. 30, 2025 in order to interview and select a candidate by year-end; that motion passed with the chairman abstaining.
The motions were recorded in open session after the executive meeting; the board directed staff to proceed with the administrative steps implied by each action.
