Board appoints Kenneth Bell as interim Dendron supervisor until November special election

The Surry County Board of Supervisors appointed Kenneth Bell as the interim supervisor for the Dendron District until a special election scheduled for Nov. 4.
Miss Perkins explained the legal process: after Supervisor Drury's resignation on July 4 the Circuit Court set a special election for Nov. 4 and Virginia code allows the board to appoint an interim supervisor until the winner of that special election is qualified and sworn in. The board said it had solicited applications and interviewed two candidates, Cameron Drew and Kenneth Bell, during a July 31 special meeting.
A supervisor moved to appoint Kenneth Bell to the interim position and the motion received a second. The board approved the appointment by voice vote. Chair said Bell must be sworn in by the circuit court clerk before serving on the board.
Board members publicly thanked both applicants and encouraged continued civic engagement by younger candidates. The board indicated the appointment is effective immediately and will remain in place until the November special election qualifies the elected candidate.
