Board adopts legislative priorities list for upcoming General Assembly session

Supervisor Mark Cole (presenting the draft) said the list emphasizes items the county believes have a practical chance of passage while also flagging longer-term priorities. Top entries include creating a separate Business, Professional and Occupational License (BPOL) category for medical and health care providers; adding vape products to local tobacco tax authority; statutory language to ease stormwater facility inspections where easements are unclear; lowering the core acreage threshold for agricultural-forestall districts from 200 to 100 acres; and advocating state support for school capital projects or an additional local referendum sales tax option.
Other priorities on the list include penalties for harassment of voters and election workers, opposition to an imposed Fredericksburg Region Transportation District (with a preference for voluntary local participation), broadband expansion and partnership language, support for state compensation of state‑supported local employees, veterans tax relief funding assistance, and targeted mental‑health services funding.
Board members discussed several items and asked that staff solicit feedback from the county’s legislators about which priorities they would support. The board voted to approve the list and asked County staff to transmit it to legislators.
