Chief of Police Colleen Jacobs presented an interlocal agreement with Granite School District to place two school resource officers (SROs) at Granger High School. Jacobs said the district requested West Valley provide two officers assigned to Granger rather than splitting responsibilities between agency officers. The agreement specifies roles and responsibilities for officers, students and school administration and includes a negotiated clause allowing either party to rescind after the first year if the arrangement proves unsatisfactory.
Council members asked about coordination when incidents begin on school property and continue off-campus; Jacobs said officers can follow incidents that start on campus. Members also asked how summer duties are handled; Jacobs said the officers would switch to detective responsibilities during the summer months and that extracurricular activities during evenings or weekends would be handled through overtime paid by the district.
Jacobs said the district’s reimbursement does not fully cover a salary and benefits package but that youth engagement and relationship building are expected to provide community benefits. No formal vote on the interlocal was recorded in the study session; the item was discussed as a resolution item.
