Council study meeting previews $200,000 purchase of Native American WWII code‑talker statue

Jay Karslanian told the council the statue would be installed in phase two of Veterans Memorial Park and described the design as preliminary. “Before you is what we have discussed … a resolution to purchase the Native American World War II code talker statue from Atlas Bronze,” Karslanian said, noting the price was negotiated down from $300,000 to $200,000.
Karslanian said the acquisition would use previously identified county funds and the city’s matching contribution; he stated the purchase would not further burden the city’s funds. A council member asked whether a 30% deduction from county funds had been applied; Karslanian replied that county money of about $900,000 and the city’s matching contribution would cover planned park expenditures and that the statue would be purchased from that total.
The item was discussed in the study meeting for placement on the regular meeting agenda later that night; no formal council vote on the resolution was recorded at the study session. The resolution (listed on the agenda as 25‑1) is scheduled for action on the regular meeting agenda.
