Cumberland County honors Soil and Water staff for statewide certifications

Cumberland County commissioners honored multiple employees of the Soil and Water Conservation District for professional advancement and statewide certifications during their Feb. 2026 meeting.
Assistant County Manager Faith Phillips told the board that staff members attended the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts' annual meeting in Cherokee and received awards through the NC District Employees Association. Colin Hall was recognized with a standard certification and an associate standard; Greta Stephens (unable to attend the meeting) received professional and master 1 certifications.
Phillips also announced certified conservation planner achievements awarded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service: Hall earned a level 1 certified conservation planner credential; Leanna Stanfield earned level 2; and Mitchell Miller earned level 3 with a certified nutrient management planner specialty. Commissioners thanked the staff for their work conserving the county's natural resources.
What happens next: the board publicly acknowledged the staff; no formal action was required. The county will continue to note professional development among county staff as part of personnel and program updates.
