Walker said the group surveyed more than 300 coastal community residents and found "more than 80% support smoke free multiunit housing." She described health concerns tied to secondhand and thirdhand smoke and said thirdhand smoke is a residue that can seep into curtains, furniture and flooring and is difficult to remove.
Walker said the group's objective is to encourage Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas to adopt smoke‑free multiunit housing ordinances and noted that most multiunit property managers surveyed supported smoke‑free policies. Walker framed the item as information only and asked for commissioners' support and awareness.
The commission did not take a formal position at the meeting; the item was presented for information and outreach rather than as a city policy proposal on the agenda. Walker provided handouts related to the initiative and urged ongoing public‑health collaborations.
