The board read a drafted letter addressed to state lawmakers asserting that the Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund was created as a dedicated, protected resource to ensure emergency assistance for veterans and should not be swept into the state's general fund. "The Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund was never intended to be part of the state's general fund or general state revenues," the letter states, warning that appropriating the fund would undermine its purpose and "place veterans emergency assistance at risk." The letter urges senators to oppose LB1072 and to preserve the fund’s dedicated status.
Commissioner Irvin moved and Commissioner Anderson seconded a motion authorizing the chair to sign the letter, forward it to state senators and publish it in local newspapers; the motion passed by roll call. The board discussed sending the letter to additional senators and newspapers, and asked clerk staff to scan and circulate the document as appropriate.
