Joey Shugel, Park and Recreation Director, presented the scoreboard proposal and said the baseball association plans to purchase the replacement board from AIM Electronics at an estimated cost of $259,553, including required electrical upgrades and installation. "Before you is a proposal for the New Ulm Baseball Association to move forward with the purchase and donation to the City of New Ulm for a replacement scoreboard at Johnson Park," Shugel said. If approved, a formal donation resolution will return to the council for acceptance.
Council members commended the baseball association. One councilor thanked the group, noting their long history of supporting parks and recreation programming. The council voted to permit planning to go forward and to return a formal donation acceptance for a later meeting.
On a related parks item, staff requested and the council adopted a resolution authorizing overnight temporary camping in South German Park near Third Street for the River Valley BMX Association’s state qualifying race on the nights of June 12–14, 2026. Staff emphasized conditions: the area can be wet depending on weather and staff will verify suitability prior to the event; if recreational fires are prohibited due to weather, staff will notify organizers.
The council also accepted Park & Recreation donations totaling $3,850, including a $1,600 contribution from New Ulm Public Schools for the 'Wreck on the Go' program and several paver and memorial donations.
What happens next: Staff will coordinate installation planning and the donation acceptance resolution for the scoreboard, confirm site conditions for the BMX camping and advise organizers on allowable uses, and process the acceptance of donations per city policy.
