KCAD executive director outlines small‑business and housing work, tourism projects and housing activity

Mary Wilson, executive director of the Keith County Area Development (KCAD), reported to the Board on KCAD’s recent year of work and priorities.
Wilson highlighted a marketing refresh and online presence project, a successful sculpture walk and a community mural that engaged more than 200 participants. KCAD’s small‑business support includes transition assistance (three businesses in active transition work) and a forthcoming 2026 progressive business series of five sessions covering marketing, investment and tourism topics in partnership with Mid Plains Community College.
Housing remains a central focus: Wilson said all loan funds currently are allocated to housing and that KCAD has six active contracts (three inside Ogallala city limits and three within the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction). She reported 11 homes completed since January 2022 and said KCAD will continue to prioritize grant exploration and projects that fit available funding.
Wilson also noted KCAD’s involvement with larger projects such as the racetrack casino project, which she described as taking nearly four years to develop, and said the organization is cautious in participating directly in private developments while continuing to connect investors to owners where appropriate. She told commissioners KCAD has received inquiries from investors interested in a 74‑unit apartment project and that the office is being careful to limit direct participation to facilitation and introduction work.
Commissioners thanked Wilson for the update and for the quarterly report handed out to the board; no formal action was required.
Next steps: KCAD will continue work on wayfinding, banners for visitor entrances and several tourism and business development projects, and will notify the board of grant opportunities that match local projects.
