Keith County approves $5,000 promotions grant for Western Nebraska Gun Show; tourism director reports record lodging-tax month

The Keith County Board of Commissioners approved a $5,000 promotions grant for the Western Nebraska Gun Show and accepted final reimbursements for two tourism events during its regular meeting.

The vote followed a presentation by Keith County Chamber tourism director Sean Rubin, who described the grant request from Stephanie Thompson, owner of the Western Nebraska Gun Show, to promote two multi-day events (Jan. 17–18 in Ogallala and a February show in Brule). "I will get in contact with Stephanie and let her know," Rubin said after the motion passed. The motion to approve the $5,000 grant was moved by Commissioner Wortman and seconded by Commissioner Anderson; all commissioners voted yes.

Rubin also presented two final grant reimbursements. The Ogallala Roundup Rodeo submitted a $5,000 reimbursement request for promotional expenses; Rubin said Placer AI attendance data show the rodeo’s visitors increased from about 2,300 last year to about 2,700 this year. "They did see an increase," Rubin said, summarizing the data. The Ovalle Indian Summer Rendezvous originally requested $12,000 and spent $7,355; Rubin told commissioners some planned TV advertising failed to run because the vendor had family emergencies, and he recommended documenting those outcomes for future planning.

Rubin outlined several marketing activities for early 2026, including trade-show attendance in Lincoln, Omaha and Cheyenne and a new presence at a Denver show focused on regional attendees. He noted a record month of lodging-tax receipts for September and said the tourism office will present a year-end recap of KPIs, a BCG-style matrix and a SWOT analysis at the next meeting.

Commissioners discussed operational items tied to visitor services, including plans to wrap a county trailer with marketing vinyl and to protect trailer hardware during installation. Rubin said printing for next year’s late guide will begin in December and that he will report back on the performance of new shows and promotions.

Procedural details: the grant motion was recorded in the minutes as moved by Wortman and seconded by Anderson, with a unanimous recorded vote in favor. Rubin indicated the chamber will follow up with the gun-show promoter to finalize next steps.

What’s next: the tourism office will provide a year-end KPI recap at the next meeting and will notify the board when the promotional grant paperwork and reporting are complete.
