Council declines to remove Planning Commissioner Tony Buie; matter tabled for further review

The City Council considered a request to remove Planning Commissioner Tony Buie at the Sept. 10 meeting after public complaints and a citizen claim were presented during oral communications. Several council members cited concerns about Buie's public comments and the risk those comments could create in quasi-judicial proceedings. Other council members and the commissioner's supporters urged caution, saying removal should be based on clear evidence of misconduct.
Multiple substitute motions were made. A motion to remove Buie failed on a 2-3 vote. After additional debate, the council voted 5-0 to table the item to the Sept. 24 meeting and to ask staff to include consideration of Buie's membership on the Measure YE oversight committee as part of the follow-up report. The motion included direction that the appointing councilmember speak with the appointee and consider next steps; staff will return a fuller agenda packet at the next regular meeting.
