ACP approves letter to County Council on immigration-protection bill with two recommended changes

The Advisory Commission on Policing voted to forward a letter to the County Council about Bill 35-25e, which would codify existing executive policies into county law regarding interactions with immigration-enforcement requests. Commissioners said they generally welcome the bill but recommended two specific changes before sending advice to the council.
What the ACP recommended: Francisco described the edits: first, the bill should explicitly list acceptable documents and cap fees that preapproved nonprofit organizations may charge when providing identification services; second, the semiannual reporting requirement should be replaced with a requirement for agency heads to notify the county executive and council in writing within three working days when an agency response was not in compliance with the bill. "Mandatory reporting requirements are useful ... but if there's specific information we want to get, prompt notification is more important," Francisco said.
Vote and next steps: A motion to approve the letter drafted by Eva, Francisco, and Sherry was moved and seconded; the commission voted "aye" and recorded the motion as carried. Staff will send the approved letter to the County Council for consideration.
