VDOT Abingdon Residency outlines repairs, projects and storm recovery work

VDOT's acting Abingdon resident administrator, Matthew Lewis, updated the Washington County Board of Supervisors on routine maintenance, storm recovery and several construction projects.
Lewis said a sinkhole on Route 58 was repaired and lanes were reopened on July 28; VDOT plans additional drainage work in that area. He reported progress on sites damaged by Hurricane Helene and February flooding—out of 45 Hurricane Helene sites identified, 27 are complete; the county has four routes remaining to be paved and additional sites showing varied completion rates. Lewis said additional hired equipment crews were added to finish flood-related work before winter, targeting completion around September–October.
Lewis reviewed capital projects: the Route 58 reconstruction was reportedly complete in July 2025; the Route 1212 bridge replacement is under construction with a target completion near July 2027; a northbound widening/bridge project near Lowery Hills is expected to be complete in June 2026. VDOT also reported the truck-climbing lanes near the 34-mile marker were largely open and that traffic-signal detour capabilities had been upgraded to help incident response.
He noted routine mowing cycles, work on Route 800 (Hiawatha Road) pending contractor availability, latex-route paving completed on several numbered routes, and a temporary closure at Route 748 Clinchburg Road near the Salt Trail trestle while VDOT and Saltville coordinate repairs.
Supervisors thanked Lewis and several raised concerns about local responsiveness and road conditions; Lewis asked board members to send identified route concerns to the Abingdon residency for follow-up.
