Board funds Fire Rescue match, pays breathing apparatus invoice and names EMS facility for Wayne Stevens Jr.

The Washington County Board of Supervisors approved a series of emergency-services items, voting unanimously to support a local match for a Washington County Fire & Rescue RSAF grant, to pay the second installment of a three-payment financing for Clinch Mountain breathing apparatus, and to name a planned EMS/public-safety facility after longtime board member Wayne Stevens Jr.
County staff (Speaker 8) told the board Washington County Fire & Rescue had been awarded an RSAF grant to fund medication/drug boxes after local hospitals stopped furnishing them; the staff presentation requested a local match from reserve contingency. The board approved the match by voice vote, 6-0.
Separately, staff clarified the breathing apparatus vendor financing was structured as three equal payments. The board approved payment number two for $47,962.78 to be paid from the board—s contingency funds; staff said the county will replenish contingency at fiscal carryover. The payment approval left contingency at approximately $6,564.66, per staff comments.
Jason Berry also presented a rendering for a new EMS/public-safety facility in Glade and recommended naming it the Wayne Stevens Jr. Public Safety Facility. Berry said he had signed a letter to obligate $1,800,000 in federal rural development funds to help build the facility and described the grant as an unusually large rural development facilities award for Southwest Virginia. Board members praised Stevens— long service and the motion to approve the naming passed 6-0.
