Board debates finance/audit committee role, keeps committee seats open for later decision

Supervisors spent significant time Jan. 20 discussing the role and composition of the county finance and audit committee amid an audit backlog. Several supervisors praised consultant Barry Dunn’s work reconciling de minimis items to allow external auditors to resume, while others urged protecting staff time to finish the audit work.
One supervisor proposed suspending citizen appointments to the finance and audit committee temporarily so finance staff could focus on completing audits; others said the committee’s bylaws and citizen role in policy development are important and recommended refinements instead of suspension. The board opted to leave the seat(s) vacant and directed staff to place the committee assignment on the Feb. 1 agenda for fuller discussion and possible reappointment or reorganization.
The board approved the 2026 board and committee assignments with a change noted by the Chair and agreed to return to the finance/audit committee question in February. The board also heard brief reports thanking Fire and Rescue and noting road and well issues raised during public comment.
