Senate floor roundup: committee assignments, bills advanced and procedural votes
Summary
The Senate adopted committee reports, assigned numerous House and Senate bills to committees, advanced multiple third‑reading items (including SB71, SB172, SB100 and others), and recorded procedural votes on a range of education, safety and tax measures during a single floor session.
The Utah State Senate opened with committee and interchamber business, moving a series of committee reports and assigning bills to standing committees. The Rules Committee, chaired by Lincoln Fillmore, presented a list of bills to be assigned to various standing committees, and the Senate voted to adopt the committee report.
Procedural action included the enrollment and transmission of bills the House had signed and multiple first readings of House bills sent to Rules. The Senate also advanced several bills on third reading or scheduled them for third reading, including:
- Senate Bill 71 (motor vehicle/evidence retention amendments): substituted, passed third reading with 24 yea, 0 nay, 5 absent and will be sent to the House. - Senate Bill 172 (airport and air amendments): passed third reading with 25 yea, 0 nay, 4 absent and will be sent to the House. - Third substitute Senate Bill 100 (federalism revisions): passed 24–0 and will be transmitted to the House. - Joint Resolution 8 (UVU law school feasibility study): advanced toward third reading by roll call.
The Senate also introduced a slate of new Senate bills for first reading (for referral to Rules), including SB301–SB304. Several substitute motions were made across the agenda and multiple bills were circled pending fiscal notes.
Leaders closed the floor with final motions and adjourned until Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.
