Shally Mallory, the county’s chief appraiser, told the board the Board of Tax Assessors approved a contract with TruRoll to audit the county’s homestead exemptions to identify duplicate or ineligible claims. Mallory said the service would allow the county to correct the current digest sooner and begin recovering tax revenue in December. According to Mallory, TruRoll guarantees a 100% return on investment for each contract year; the annual cost was cited at approximately $24,000 with the county requesting an immediate budget increase of $9,650 to the tech services and maintenance line to start the work.
Commissioners moved and seconded to fund the contract. Commissioners asked whether the vendor would reimburse the county if recoveries fell short of projections; Mallory said TruRoll would reimburse a shortfall (example provided: if recoveries were $15,000, TruRoll would refund $10,000 toward the annual cost). The motion to fund the contract carried.
Staff will begin implementation steps and coordinate with the Board of Tax Assessors to flag potential homestead issues for follow-up.
