Park County library director reports rise in programming, Powell library nearing opening

Karen Horner, Park County Library director, presented the library’s 2025 annual report to the commissioners on Feb. 3. Horner said programming and outreach increased even as total visitors recorded by door counters were slightly lower, a discrepancy she attributed to off-site outreach and limitations of counting methods. "We do have door counters... so this is just kinda based on those people counters," she said, adding that some library entrances and partner spaces make the data approximate.
Horner said the library removed Hoopla because of per-use costs and transitioned more resources to Libby, which increased digital checkouts to 83,776 last year. She described several outreach programs including Books for Babies and an Americans of the Holocaust exhibit, and said upgrades were made at the Matiti school library.
The largest item in Horner’s update was the new Powell Library building. Horner said deliveries of furniture and shelving are arriving and that the library will announce the grand opening once the contractor hands over keys. "As soon as the—Grote House gives me the keys technically and says, here you go. It's yours. I'll announce it," Horner said.
Next steps: staff will complete installations and coordinate a grand opening after keys are received.
