Neighbors deliver petitions and ask Orland Park to remove pickleball courts from Evergreen View Park plan

Three residents from the Evergreen View subdivision told the Committee of the Whole they oppose proposed pickleball courts in their neighborhood park and asked the village to relocate any courts to larger community sports parks.
Cheryl Johnson said the subdivision’s homeowners association (representing 186 homes) sent a formal letter of strong opposition and that she was delivering a petition signed by residents adjacent to the park. Johnson cited research and an Acoustical Society presentation indicating potential health and annoyance impacts when outdoor courts are closer than about 1,000 feet from homes, and asked the board to remove pickleball from proposed Evergreen View improvements.
Debbie Coleman and Rich Capone also spoke against the courts, saying the neighborhood values its quiet character and suggesting Centennial Park or a designated Village sports park as a better location because of parking and restroom amenities. Several speakers said a community survey had generated interest in courts, but the neighborhood’s direct, adjacent residents objected.
Ray (staff) responded that the Evergreen View grant application did not proceed and the village is re‑evaluating the park project; staff said the playground replacement will move forward and that other improvements remain under discussion. Staff said the initial interest in courts had come from a community survey (about 363 respondents near the park; roughly 60% of those asked for two courts), but that the project will be revisited and an open house for Evergreen View residents will be scheduled.
Residents were asked to remain after the meeting for follow‑up discussion with parks staff.
