The Orange County Board of Education opened the meeting with recognitions for Black History Month and a large group of teachers who earned or renewed National Board Certification.
District representatives read the names of 22 teachers who either received national board certification for the first time or renewed it. Speaker 4 said the district aims to be a "distinguished district" with at least 20 nationally board-certified teachers.
The board also recognized school social workers and school resource officers for School Social Work Week and National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day, respectively. Speaker 3 thanked SROs for their work in building positive relationships and fostering safe learning environments.
During the public comment period, Edward Brian Edwards spoke in support of SRO recognition. He recounted that as a 2006 senior at Orange High School he experienced a campus shooting and said Deputy London Ivy and others acted to protect students. "Deputy Ivy's actions that day changed my life," Edwards said, urging the board to remember the human element behind safety and to value the courage and commitment of school resource officers.
Board members offered their congratulations and shared brief reports on recent community events, including a bus driver appreciation breakfast and school arts performances. Several members emphasized the importance of social workers and CTE programs and thanked staff who support teacher certification efforts.
