Volunteer fire company announces leadership changes, reports 63 calls in December

At the Jan. 12 council meeting, the Bethel Park volunteer fire company reported leadership changes and incident statistics for the month. Deputy Chief Rob Usselman presented the December chief’s report and announced Russ Beeson as the new chief for a two-year term, replacing Dave Gerber, who served 14 years.
Usselman said the company is fully volunteer and added six new members last year. He reported a total of 63 calls for the month, broken down as nine fire incidents, seven accidents and rescues, eight hazardous conditions, seven carbon-monoxide calls, three electrical issues, 15 good-intent calls, two smoke scares and 12 fire alarms. "So it was a busy month, but nothing we are not used to at this point in the time," he said.
Usselman encouraged residents to consider volunteering, noting training typically takes about a year and a half for new members. He also reminded residents to use space heaters safely during cold nights, advising they be plugged directly into a wall outlet and kept three feet clear of combustibles.
The council offered congratulations to the new chief and line officers; no council action or budget requests were made during the report.
