Veterans nonprofit '10-7' seeks county partnership for Montross retreat

Kurt Thomas, a retired law-enforcement and military veteran, told the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors that his nonprofit, called 10-7, operates on property near Montross and provides free outdoor respite to veterans, first responders and their families.
"You're never out of the fight," Thomas said of the nonprofit's mission, recounting his own recovery and his decision to serve others. He described plans for hikes, hunting, fishing and eventually small cabins so visitors can decompress at no cost. Thomas said the organization has submitted a permit for a 9,000-square-foot residence on the property and is exploring building a tiny-home 'caboose' as a retreat space.
Thomas asked the board to consider partnership opportunities with county programs and outreach venues; a board member suggested the group set up a booth at National Night Out and identified First Sergeant Antoine Smith as a contact for coordination. Supervisors expressed general support, with the chairman saying they would "do whatever we can do, to help facilitate this project going forward."
