The Joint Standing Committee on Labor on Feb. 10 recommended that the Senate confirm Rodney Hiltz of Monmouth as the employee representative to the Maine Unemployment Insurance Commission.
Joe Bushey, director of boards and commissions for Governor Mills, introduced the nomination and summarized Hiltz’s background — an associate degree in criminal justice, a bachelor’s in marketing management, a master’s in labor studies from UMass Amherst, training in arbitration advocacy and prior service on the Maine Workers’ Compensation Board. Bushey told the committee Hiltz’s organizing background and years of employee advocacy made him a strong candidate to represent workers on the three‑member commission that adjudicates disputed unemployment compensation claims.
Hiltz addressed the committee, emphasizing his decades representing employees and saying he would listen to both sides in adjudicative matters and "act objectively." Supporters John Rohde (in person) and Adam Good (online, Maine AFL‑CIO) testified in favor of the nomination, citing prior public service and labor experience.
Representative Rader moved that the committee recommend confirmation and the clerk called the roll; the committee voted unanimously in favor. The committee will forward its recommendation to the president of the Senate.
