Commissioners debate paver replacement, animal shelter progress and local events

Paver equipment concern: One commissioner pressed staff to explore replacing or purchasing an additional paver, noting the county’s current machine is aging and repairs or downtime can delay projects. The commissioner said using reserve funds to buy a spare might be prudent so projects are not interrupted: “That one we got is getting some age on it...it might pay us to look at purchasing another one to replace this one.” The chair and other commissioners agreed to look into costs and options with staff and engineering.
Road projects and engineering schedule: Commissioners and staff reported contractors are working on Lucas Ferry, with work expected to continue through the week, and engineering may shift to Ingram Road to wrap up projects carried over from the prior fiscal year.
Animal shelter and retirements: Commissioners reaffirmed ongoing efforts to secure land and build a new animal shelter. The commission recognized upcoming retirements of county finance staffer Emily Ezale, praised for long service steering county finances, and paving superintendent Terry Bob Boyd, who was thanked for roughly 25 years of service.
Community events and outreach: Commissioner Turner highlighted Mardi Gras events downtown in Athens and an adaptive indoor baseball kickoff featuring representatives from League of Dreams and a former Major League Baseball player; commissioners were invited to attend and show support.
