Estuary MPA program and state parks outline spring monitoring plans; groups invite coordination

Kevin (Estuary MPA monitoring program) reported that spring sampling is underway across the North, Central and South Coasts as part of the EMPA program, covering about 15 estuaries with plans to expand coverage in the next funding round to target at least seven estuaries per region. Jan and others described additional Southern California monitoring at small intermittently closed estuaries such as Malibu Lagoon, Zuma and Bolsa Chica.
State Parks representatives said ongoing monitoring is funding-supported for Los Penasquitos, Carmel and Pajaro, and a new project with UC Davis will begin water-level monitoring at several bar-built estuaries. Other participants described bird-monitoring seasons, comparative studies of older tidal restorations and experimental wood-loading monitoring at Ocean Ranch (Eel River Wildlife Area).
Speakers reiterated interest in sharing lists of sampling sites, contacts and protocols so regional programs and the clearinghouse can be cross-referenced. Several attendees offered to provide site names, contact details and monitoring protocol drafts to the CEMW notes.
