Stakeholders drafting manuscript from Tiburon workshop to guide statewide estuarine monitoring

Julie, who co-led the Tiburon workshop, told the work group that the manuscript will record workshop findings and recommend pathways toward a unified statewide estuarine monitoring enterprise. The draft introduction highlights the need for a shared vision amid changing environmental conditions, historical barriers to coordination (funding, data access and inconsistent approaches), and the workshop's role in identifying tangible next steps.

Julie described planned manuscript sections: workshop framework (methods and participant demographics), workshop outputs (barriers and needs), case studies (Chesapeake, Great Lakes and other coordinated-monitoring efforts) and a discussion that integrates workshop lessons with recommendations for policy and management. She welcomed input and volunteers to draft sections and suggested the work group could be framed as the collaborative nexus for the manuscript rather than limiting the paper to the single Tiburon event.

Participants suggested cross-referencing the EPA three-tier monitoring framework, explicitly addressing tribal and indigenous inclusion, and incorporating regional California case studies. Multiple attendees offered follow-up support to help synthesize breakout-group outputs and to align the manuscript with ongoing data-collection and clearinghouse efforts.

Next steps: workshop organizers will circulate notes and a list of interested contributors; the manuscript will be further scoped to include work-group activities, the clearinghouse effort and regional case studies as appropriate.
