Newark leader praises first responders after Thornton Avenue house fire

The presiding official said a Newark police officer helped escort a senior citizen out of the home and he described two people who were in the garage and escaped with minor burns. A resident on scene told the presiding official, “I was just relaxing in my room ... I heard a popping sound,” according to the record.
The presiding official used the moment to underscore public safety as the council’s top priority and to thank first responders for an “outstanding” response that protected lives and nearby properties. The meeting then adjourned.
