Senate committees advance bill to designate first Friday in February as 'Love My Library Day'

The Senate committees on Education and on Water, Land, Culture and the Arts moved SB 2147 forward on Feb. 13 after unanimous support from library advocates and Department of Education witnesses.
State Librarian Stacy Aldridge testified in support and said the designation is a statewide recognition, not a holiday, that underscores libraries’ role in fostering literacy and community connections. Heidi Armstrong of DOE echoed support for elevating school libraries and encouraging community advocacy.
With three organizations and eleven individuals also on record in support, the committees recommended passing SB 2147 with technical, non-substantive amendments.
Next steps: The bill advances from committee with amendments; supporters said they will continue outreach to encourage community events recognizing libraries.
