Senate adopts Saint Patrick's and Saint Joseph's resolutions; exempts Little Compton Game Club from property tax

The Rhode Island Senate on the floor read and adopted two ceremonial resolutions and approved a local tax-exemption bill.

Senator Burke requested the reading and moved passage of a resolution celebrating Saint Patrick's Day and the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Ireland; the chamber adopted the resolution by voice vote after the clerk read its text. Senator Burke told the chamber, "I'd like to wish everyone a happy Saint Patrick's Day," and the resolution called for certified copies to be transmitted to members of the American Irish State Legislators Caucus and other listed officials.

Shortly after, President Gallo requested and moved passage of a resolution commemorating Saint Joseph's Day; that resolution also was read and adopted by voice vote. President Gallo introduced family members in the gallery and noted the celebration.

On the regular calendar, Chairman DePalmer presented S 2588, a local act described in debate as exempting the Little Compton Game Club from property taxation. Chairman DePalmer said the club does not conduct gaming but hosts clam bakes, dinners and Eagle Scout ceremonies. He moved passage of the act; the clerk recorded 35 members voting in the affirmative, none in the negative, and the act passed.

Councilman Steven Anthony La Portchio was invited to the floor to perform a rendition of "Danny Boy" for the chamber following the Saint Patrick's resolution.

All adopted resolutions and acts will be transmitted to the secretary of state, the House of Representatives and the governor as appropriate for further processing.
