At its Feb. 11 meeting, the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee approved the minutes of the previous meeting and later accepted a staff report on the Canal boatyard acquisition and potential park and crossing feasibility, offering a supportive endorsement for further work.
Minutes: Member Mooney moved to approve the December draft minutes; Kyle seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Canal boatyard report: After John Thomas (San Rafael Public Works) summarized the recent purchase of the former boatyard at 620 Canal and the project's potential as a park and a southern abutment for a Canal crossing, a committee member moved to accept the report with supportive endorsement; the motion carried unanimously.
Public comment: Ken Dickinson read a letter into the record urging the committee to consider bicycle parking adequacy in high-density developments. Dickinson said a recently approved 200-unit downtown project at 700 Irwin Street provided only 60 bicycle parking spaces and that the reduction (he estimated at about 78%) risks pushing residents to store bikes in units and create electric-battery charging safety concerns. The committee discussed adding an agenda item for the next meeting to review bicycle-parking standards and potential comment to City Council.
The committee also heard multiple project updates from staff on Embarcadero pilot striping, HSIP-funded intersection work, and the city's draft bike plan outreach schedule. The meeting adjourned at about 7:59 p.m.; the next meeting is scheduled for April 8 at 6 p.m.
