City announces Black History Month closing ceremony at City Hall Feb. 27 with mayoral proclamation

Christiana Gallagher, community relations director for the City of Jackson, said the city will hold a Black History Month closing celebration on Monday, Feb. 27 at 4:00 p.m. in the main foyer of City Hall. Mayor Conger will present a proclamation and the program will include student presentations, a poem reading by West Bemis Middle School student Ian Tamayo and musical performances.
Gallagher said the month opened with ceremonies on Feb. 6 and that the closing celebration will feature an original composition by Lane College alumnus Howard Ransby and performances by the West Bemis Middle School Chorus. She also said the Theta Iota graduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi and Lane College’s Kappa Sigma chapter will participate, offering a unity step and a ‘hop’ as part of the centennial observance.
The coordinator and hosts encouraged the public to attend and to move between events that day, noting a free community concert by performer Justin Cooper at 6 p.m. at Northside Assembly on the same evening. Gallagher said the closing ceremony intends to highlight local artists, student work and community organizations and marks 100 years of national observance of Black History Month.
The broadcast did not provide a list of every participant or formal program timings beyond the 4 p.m. start; attendees were directed to the City Hall foyer for the event.
