The LaPorte County Board of Zoning Appeals recorded the following formal actions at its Feb. 17 meeting:
- Approval of minutes from the January 20 meeting (unanimous verbal 'Aye').
- Petition 1 (Gary Malone and Brianna Renee Shaw): moved to the end of the current agenda and subsequently tabled to the March meeting.
- Petition 2 (NLEJ Williams LLC / Monroe Lane LLC — 9908 S. 300 W): Approved with conditions. The board authorized a use variance for a banquet/event venue and adopted conditions discussed on the record including start times around 9:00 a.m.; Monday–Thursday events ending by 8:00 p.m.; Friday–Saturday events ending by 11:00 p.m.; Sunday events ending by 9:00 p.m.; and a sign no larger than 4 by 8 feet with soft lighting. Applicants were directed to coordinate with the building department.
- Petition 3 (TK Repair LLC use variance on Johnson Road): moved to the March 17 meeting (postponed).
- Petition 4 (Panacea/Suya Holdings — 4666 N. Johnson Rd): Approved. Board confirmed operating hours of Monday–Friday 08:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., limited Saturday hours (08:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.), and use of the existing on‑building sign.
- Petition 5 (Timothy and Catherine — detached garage setback at 120 Judson Road): Tabled. Board members indicated an additional variance (10-foot spacing between buildings) was required but was not included in the original notice, so the petition must be re-noticed and returned in March.
- Petition 6 (Sarah Leap and Theodor Leap — keep 2 campers and 2 trailers on vacant property at 10647 S. Hundley Rd): Denied. The board ordered removal of campers/trailers and debris within 120 days and indicated the building department will inspect the property for additional citations related to junk or unregistered vehicles.
These actions reflect the board’s effort to balance reuse and preservation on historic properties, continued commercial frontage uses, and neighbor concerns about property maintenance and nuisance conditions. The board adjourned at the close of the agenda.
