Weston School District fixes annex sewer backup; district awaiting invoice

Summary
Facilities staff said a complete blockage at the annex required digging and a new main to the rear septic tank; systems are operational but the district is "awaiting the damage" (invoices) and has not yet determined cost responsibility with the town.
The Finance, Facilities and Operations Committee heard on Friday that a sewer main beneath the district annex backed up in January and required an unplanned excavation and pipe replacement. Mike, the district’s facilities representative, told the committee crews attempted snaking, jetting and camera inspection before hiring a contractor to locate the blockage and run a new main into the septic tank in the rear woods. "Happy to report, everything is back up and normal," Mike said.
Mike said archived building prints were unavailable — staff attempted to obtain them through the health network and state print archives, but access was blocked by unrelated damage to the Hartford records room. With no reliable prints, crews located the pipe by careful excavation and installed a new, oversized main set below the frost line to reduce future failures. Additional piping was installed to make cleaning easier.
The district is still waiting for itemized repair costs. "We’re just awaiting the damage at this point, which is the cost of the project," Mike said. Committee members asked whether the town or the school district would bear the cost because the annex is shared. Mike said the district will explore responsibility once invoices arrive.
The committee also asked whether the problem could recur; Mike said the reconfigured piping and oversized main should prevent a repeat. The report closed with thanks to staff who coordinated calls, including a reference to Andrew Galli for assistance locating records.
Next steps: staff will provide the committee with invoices and any follow-up on cost-sharing discussions once charges are received and reviewed.
