Board approves travel, hears VSO report showing growth in veteran payments

Commissioners voted to authorize travel for a staff member (Jennifer) to attend certified veterans advocate training in Reno, Nevada, May 31–June 5. Commissioner Ebinger introduced the motion and Commissioner Bair seconded; the board carried the motion after confirming the trip is a budgeted item.
Separately, the board approved leave/travel for the veteran service officer to participate as a volunteer on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., May 10–12. Kurt, the veteran service officer, described the VSO office’s work and staffing: "We have 3 of us basically, and putting in the hours," and highlighted state grant programs (SSAP and dental/optical grants) that assist veterans with home repairs, medical, and transportation needs.
Kurt reported payments to Clay County veterans for 2025 totaled $765,824.53 and discussed property tax exemption counts used to estimate benefits for 70%+ service‑connected veterans. "Our SSAP for 2025 was $93,030 compared to $74,008.90 last year," he said, noting an uptick in awards and application activity.
Commissioners thanked the VSO staff for their service and supportive administration of benefits; the motions to approve both travel requests were carried by voice vote.
