Estill County board approves committee appointments, Young Smiles agreement and a shortened school day

The Estill County Board of Education, meeting Feb. 17 in Irving, approved a set of routine motions and agreements covering committee appointments, a student health services contract and a case-specific schedule adjustment.

Local planning committee: The board nominated and confirmed Donna Isford as the board representative on the district’s board-appointed local planning committee, which will help shape the district facilities plan required by law. The board also voted to open an application process for three community members to serve on that committee; the application will be posted on the district website and available at the central office.

School calendar committee: The board approved formation of the 2026–27 school calendar committee and confirmed Sharon Whitaker as the board representative on that committee.

Young Smiles Dental agreement: The board approved renewing the agreement with Young Smiles Dental, which provides free dental services to students and has worked with the district in prior years.

Shortened school day: The board approved a shortened school day for an individual student. Mister Brock clarified during the public-comment response that such schedules are used only in specific, individualized cases and are recommended by the ARC with parent or guardian participation; reasons may include medical needs.

Consent agenda and finance: The board approved minutes from a Jan. special call meeting, the treasurer’s report and payment of bills.

Adjournment: The board adjourned following a motion by Sheila Samples and a second by Tammy Hardy.
