Staff update and financial status
Taxton Van Bell (Wastewater) told council this was a recurring staff report on the Fairway Canyon mainline failure. He said the city had expended $540,000 out of pocket and was currently encumbered for $1,028,000 on paper; staff therefore requested $100,000 of additional authority to ensure the city could complete repairs and cover contingency while remaining mindful that ongoing legal fees could increase costs.
"We are at a point where we have hit the $1,000,000 budget on paper, and therefore this has become an action item to request city manager authority for an additional $100,000," Van Bell said.
Council questions and action
Council members asked about legal-fee uncertainty and construction timelines; staff said final repair construction had started but rain had briefly paused work and legal-fee totals could still change. A motion to extend the declaration of a local emergency and authorize the increase in spending authority to $1.1 million was moved, seconded and adopted by unanimous roll call.
Next steps
Staff said construction for the final repair is underway and expected to conclude in the coming weeks, and that they will continue to monitor encumbrances and legal obligations.
