Student representative Troy reported that six students from Hazleton Area High School and the Career Center began a Chief Science Officer (CSO) leadership program after training at Johnson College; the district's Fine Arts Club entered PennDOT's Paint the Plow contest with public voting on Dec. 14 and student projects supporting veterans were highlighted.
Student representative Troy told the Hazleton Area School District board the district is launching a Chief Science Officer (CSO) program to build science communication and project-management skills. "The CSO program gives students a seat at the table," Troy said, adding that six students from Hazleton Area High School and the Hazleton Area Career Center are the district's first CSOs after leadership training at Johnson College.
Troy also highlighted Fine Arts Club work: students collaborated on a PennDOT "Paint the Plow" design themed "Don't race, allow some space." The contest will be open to public voting on Dec. 14. Fine Arts students also produced more than 150 ceramic poppies handed out to veterans at a veterans breakfast and painted a mural for American Legion Post 76 that will be permanently displayed in the post's meeting space.
The board thanked the student representative and club advisors (Rebecca Ward and Jamie Beadleman) for community-focused projects that connect classroom learning to civic engagement.
