Resident pitches pickleball courts; commission urges coordination with parks and council

Randall (Randy) Tennell told the River Heights Planning & Zoning Commission on Feb. 10 that he and the mayor have discussed building pickleball courts and would like the commission’s input on potential siting and feasibility. Tennell presented three possible court configurations and said he estimated construction costs at about $91,000 for three courts and $121,000 for four courts, acknowledging the figures are approximate and that funding and approvals remain to be determined.
Commissioners responded that the commission’s formal role is limited: it can advise on rezonings or general-plan amendments but does not itself select or fund park projects. Members advised Tennell to coordinate with Parks Director (mentioned in discussion as Chris Milbank) and to present the proposal to the City Council’s agenda and capital planning process. Several commissioners said a preferred location would be stacked courts at the north end of the existing tennis courts with fencing and a sound screen between tennis and pickleball facilities.
Tennell said he will appear on the City Council agenda the following week to pursue capital and siting conversations; no action was requested or taken by the commission that night.
