Middletown honors firefighters, dispatcher after November cardiac save

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — The Middletown City Council on Feb. 3 recognized a coordinated emergency response that city and hospital officials said restored a resident’s life after a cardiac arrest last November.
Fire Chief Bridal Wright introduced an award presentation by Atrium Medical Center’s EMS coordinator, identified in the meeting as Karen (Ward/Board), honoring dispatcher Amy Scott and members of the Middletown Fire Department for their response to an incident on Nov. 6 at 1021 Hughes Street. Council and hospital staff credited the patient’s wife for beginning CPR under dispatcher instruction and said that immediate bystander action, early defibrillation and advanced life support from the fire department and EMS led to a positive outcome.
“Her swift actions and composure in this critical moment were instrumental in saving her husband's life,” the hospital representative said while describing the dispatcher-assisted CPR. Council heard that the crew arrived about four minutes after dispatch, responders used a defibrillator four times and the patient achieved return of spontaneous circulation during transport. Staff notified Atrium in advance so the cardiac catheterization lab was ready on arrival; the patient was treated for an occluded mid left circumflex artery and discharged the next day.
Chief Wright invited the recognized personnel to the dais; the council publicly thanked the firefighters, EMTs and dispatch staff. Mayor Slamka and council members praised the teamwork and the role that dispatcher guidance and bystander CPR played in the outcome.
The presentation concluded with certificates and challenge coins given to squad members and the patient met the crew onstage. Council did not take legislative action on the item; the award was ceremonial and aimed at public recognition.
