City manager outlines grant bids, pickleball-court relocation and budget schedule

City Manager (unnamed) told the Wayne City Council on Feb. 17 the administration will apply this month for several federal discretionary grants to fund local projects.
The manager listed projects under consideration including an ADA-compliant kayak launch to connect Gaudi Park to Fenoy Dorsey, encryption for police radios and funding for an ambulance. A design process is underway for the Atwood Walk Path and new pickleball courts, the manager said.
The manager explained a recent personnel change at Wayne County—specifically a new county parks director—required staff to restart paperwork for moving planned pickleball courts from Rotary to JC Park. Because of that process, the county will prepare a government agreement to allow the city to "stack" park millage allocations from 2025 and 2026 to fund construction of two pickleball courts; the manager said previously the city received about $13,500 in annual park millage and stacking will allow a larger project budget.
On the municipal calendar, the manager said departmental budget meetings are complete, the budget package is now with Plante Moran for compilation, the council will receive a physical budget for review on April 21 and the manager will present the budget publicly on May 7. The manager also said collective-bargaining negotiations with most city unions will begin in coming months, noting multiple contracts expire June 30.
The manager also said Sen. Camilleri is scheduled to visit on Feb. 27 to meet with the council and provide updates from Lansing.
Next steps for the administration include submitting grant applications this month, finalizing design specifications for park projects and returning to council with a compiled budget and schedule for collective-bargaining engagement.
