Wayne Council approves first readings for two fire-code ordinances, traffic change, membership renewal and enters closed session

Council approved first reading of Ordinance 2026-01, which rescinds section 16.10.14 of the Wayne City Code and removes an unused self-inspection program for nonresidential businesses. The fire chief told council the self-inspection program was created after a 2013 merger but "was never fully implemented," and that the fire marshal has continued to perform inspections. Council approved the ordinance’s first reading by voice vote.
Council also approved first reading of Ordinance 2026-02 to amend Chapter 16.10 so fees for fire-department services can be set by council resolution rather than embedded in ordinance language. The fire chief said fee schedules historically have been set by resolution and that the ordinance change simply aligns the code with that practice; council approved the first reading by voice vote.
On transportation, council approved Traffic Control Order No. 6-26 to add lane markings on northbound 2nd Street at westbound Michigan Avenue—creating a left-turn-only lane and a straight-through lane. A public works representative said the markings match similar intersections and staff had coordinated with DPW and building engineering. Council members questioned whether left turns on red would be permitted; the chief clarified the rule for turning left onto one-way streets and noted limitations when traffic would be approaching from the opposite direction. The traffic order passed by voice vote.
Other council action included renewing the city’s Michigan Municipal League membership for $9,030 from the council membership and dues budget and approving the consent calendar (Downtown Development Authority minutes 01/14/2026 and Commission on Aging minutes 01/13/2026). Council then voted to adjourn to closed session to consult with the city attorney about trial or settlement strategy in several pending cases, citing MCL 15.268(1)(e). Roll-call votes for the closed session motion were recorded as affirmative.
