STATESVILLE, N.C. — At its Dec. 1 meeting, the Statesville City Council held a ceremonial session to honor departing members, receive a state award presentation, approve routine items and formally swear in the incoming mayor and council.
The session began with an invocation from Reverend Jeremy Canada of First Presbyterian Church in Statesville and a reading of the Pledge of Allegiance. Walter L. Bowers Jr., director of the governor’s Charlotte office, presented the Order of the Longleaf Pine — which he described as “one of the highest civilian honors that can be granted by the governor of North Carolina” — and called up three recipients for recognition.
