El Segundo approves DEI committee work plan to guide outreach, proclamations and events

The El Segundo City Council voted to approve a work plan from the city’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee that lays out outreach, data collection and event programming through 2027.
Director Mancini introduced the item and turned the presentation to DEI committee chair Veil Bolena, who said the volunteer committee has organized its work into three subcommittees for civic outreach, communications and events. Bolena described planned activities including a short community research effort, business outreach to understand inclusion barriers, coordination with the library and historical society on programming, and an awards program to recognize DEI achievements.
Subcommittee leads Kelly Allen, Demario Wright and LaRuth Wright outlined deliverables: a Q1 research push to gather resident and business feedback; accessibility reviews for city events; and a plan to present a report of findings to council in September with further activities through the year. Councilmembers asked about survey methodology, award criteria and current vacancies on the committee; staff and committee members said details are being finalized and that the application for two open seats is active.
After brief questioning, the council voted to approve the work plan as presented. Staff will coordinate the survey approach, liaise with library and other commissions and return on the proposed schedule.
