Sheriff Kelly: hires pending, chiller coils quoted at ~$43,000 and K-9 to retire

Sheriff Kelly updated the Clinton County commissioners on staffing, facility maintenance and K-9 retirement plans Feb. 17.
Kelly said three merit-deputy hires are awaiting psychological and medical clearances and that candidates are otherwise ready to be brought on. He said repair work is needed for chilled-water coils at the sheriff’s office, and he provided a QPH estimate of $43,001.64 for replacement. "There's a 20 week lead time on that as well," Kelly said, and urged the county to move forward to get the parts ordered.
Kelly asked to proceed using an existing line item rather than seek an additional appropriation; commissioners agreed that the repair could be processed through the sheriff’s line item so work could begin promptly. Kelly also reported the records clerk has provided a resignation effective in mid-March and that the office will need to address hiring to cover key functions.
On K-9 matters, Kelly said Sergeant Yoder has requested that his canine, eight years of service, be retired and that the handler would like to retain the dog. "I would highly recommend retiring him," Kelly said; commissioners indicated general agreement and asked for paperwork to formalize the retirement at a future meeting.
No formal votes beyond the authorization to proceed with repairs through the sheriff's line item were recorded to change staffing policy; actions on hiring and the K-9 retirement will be completed administratively or returned to the board as needed.
