Supervisors declare obsolete jail electrical and computer components surplus, authorize offering to public entities in Iowa

The Muscatine County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 16 declared a list of obsolete electrical and computer components from the county jail surplus and authorized the jail administration to offer usable items to public entities in the state of Iowa or place them on public auction.

Jail Administrator Matt McClure told the board the equipment list contains items the jail no longer needs and that he had coordinated with the county IT department, which had identified three items to retain. McClure noted county surplus policy typically requires offering items to in‑county public entities (for example, school districts) before broader distribution. Supervisors discussed whether it was worth staff time to market low‑value items and whether the county policy allows offering equipment to entities outside the county; staff advised that if items are to be given to another entity, the board must approve that disposition but that declaring items surplus permits auctioning them.

A motion to declare the listed property surplus and to authorize jail administration to offer items to public entities in the state of Iowa passed without opposition. Supervisors said McClure should notify the board if he identified recipients outside the county.
