The committee voted 18–0 to recommend ITL on HB1781, a bill that would extend parental child-support obligations for educational expenses past high school up to age 22.
Representative Brown, who moved ITL, said current law does not require parents to contribute beyond completion of high school and that it is unnecessary to obligate parents to pay for adult children’s higher-education costs. “Adults can pay for their own human capital investments and assume the risks of those choices,” Brown said.
Representative Burton supported ITL but noted for a different reason: he said the bill is in the wrong committee and would be better handled by Family Services. The committee recorded unanimous support for ITL and placed the item on consent.
The committee closed debate on HB1781 and continued with remaining docket items.
